Donald Trump Charged With Racketeering in Georgia Over 2020 Election

Summary from the AllSides News Team

A Georgia grand jury charged former president and 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump with racketeering and election interference in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election.

Details: The indictment states, “Trump and the other Defendants charged in this Indictment refused to accept that Trump lost, and they knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump.” In addition to Trump, the indictment includes charges against former mayor of New York City and Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, and others.

For Context: The investigation pertains to Trump’s alleged efforts in the aftermath of the 2020 election. President Joe Biden narrowly won Georgia in 2020. Shortly after the election, a phone call between Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, in which Trump asks Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes,” leaked. This is the fourth indictment against Trump this year. Trump also faces charges from the Manhattan District Attorney pertaining to alleged hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels, as well as two indictments from the U.S. Department of Justice— one pertaining to the alleged mishandling of classified documents, and one pertaining to alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, which Trump lost to President Joe Biden.

How the Media Covered It: Outlets across the spectrum covered the indictment release prominently throughout Monday evening.
