News Editor and Bias Analyst

Remote, Part-Time
POSTED: May 13, 2024

AllSides, the leader in balanced news and media bias ratings, is seeking a part-time, remote News Editor and Bias Analyst.

The AllSides team is looking for a news- and politics-savvy individual with a flexible schedule and excellent writing, analytical, and online media skills who can assist in our daily news and bias review operations.

The News Editor and Bias Analyst will be a critical addition to the AllSides team, assisting in daily news posting and summarization, helping to analyze media content for bias, and shaping and upholding editorial standards. The ideal candidate is a strong writer with experience in journalism, politics, and online media who understands the news and American political landscape, has an eye for media bias and the biggest stories of the day, and is comfortable voicing opinions while listening to and integrating feedback among disagreement.

In addition to news work, the News Editor and Bias Analyst will participate in AllSides bias reviews of news content and become a key voice on our panel of bias reviewers. Applicants will take a quiz to help identify their political leanings in order to help us achieve a breadth of perspectives, in alignment with our full transparency about the leanings of our team members.

This role is fully remote and requires a minimum of 15-20 hours per week availability.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify the most relevant news stories of the day, curate articles across the political spectrum, and write summaries for the AllSides balanced newsfeed
  • Analyze written and video news media for perceived political bias; discuss findings with a panel of analysts who may have different opinions
  • Write, review, and edit content on politics, media bias and news for the AllSides Perspectives blog and other channels
  • Provide input on key editorial decisions; uphold standards that align with the AllSides Editorial Philosophy
  • Participate in daily and weekly team meetings
  • Assist with Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Develop familiarity with types of media bias

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years experience in news media and/or politics.
  • Proficient understanding of the U.S political and news media landscape.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Well-developed personal political views.
  • Comfort verbalizing opinions, listening to/being open to other perspectives, and holding personal convictions, even amongst disagreement.
  • Reliable internet connection.
  • Flexible schedule; ideally available within the 9am-5pm ET Monday-Friday window.
  • Passionate about exposing people to a variety of perspectives and getting them out of their filter bubbles when it comes to politics, current events and controversial issues.

Not Required, But A Plus:

  • Experience updating web content using HTML.
  • Experience with Canva or other image/graphics editing software.
  • Experience with Google Drive, Mailchimp, and Slack
  • Experience with social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, Tik Tok, and LinkedIn.
