Firefighters make progress against Thompson Fire in Oroville amid punishing heat

The Thompson Fire burning in Oroville grew only slightly overnight, Cal Fire reports showed Thursday morning, a change in fortunes that may give firefighters a chance to further increase their containment of the blaze. The blaze, which whipped up on Tuesday, burned around 3,568 acres, forcing 28,000 Butte County residents to evacuate their homes. Most evacuees live in Oroville, a small town whose residents routinely face wildfire risks. Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for Butte County on Wednesday morning.
