Firefighters make progress against Thompson Fire in Oroville amid punishing heat

The Thompson Fire burning in Oroville grew only slightly overnight, Cal Fire reports showed Thursday morning, a change in fortunes that may give firefighters a chance to further increase their containment of the blaze. The blaze, which whipped up on Tuesday, burned around 3,568 acres, forcing 28,000 Butte County residents to evacuate their homes.
