Amid Legal Issues, Why Does Trump Remain GOP's 2024 Favorite?
Summary from the AllSides News Team
According to the first 2024 presidential election poll from Siena College/The New York Times (Lean Left bias), former President Donald Trump has a commanding lead over other Republican contenders despite ongoing legal issues.
The Details: Trump leads Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, 54% to 17%, in the poll of likely Republican 2024 voters, and no other candidate has more than 3%.
What the Left Said: One writer for MSNBC (Left) said "a significant amount of [Trump's] current popularity is tied to his persona," and that "Republican voters view Trump as much more fun than DeSantis." The writer also said DeSantis's strategy of "waging a war on 'wokeness' with such ferocity that it would make Trump look like a complacent moderate by comparison has not borne fruit."
What the Right Said: A writer for The American Conservative (Right) believes Trump "is poised to sweep next year’s GOP primary," and said DeSantis's focus on the "woke" culture wars and tendency to "endlessly discuss crypto, 'reconstitutionalizing the executive branch,' and similar e-right obsessions" hurts him with more "ordinary Americans."
Side Note: Never Back Down, the super PAC supporting DeSantis, reported roughly $97 million on hand at the end of June. Make America Great Again, Trump’s super PAC, reported roughly $31 million.

A poll hints at a Trump advantage in the GOP 2024 race: He's 'fun'The first New York Times/Sienna College poll of the 2024 campaign season, released Monday, showed former President Donald Trump absolutely dominating the 2024 presidential field. The poll showed Trump with 53 percent support among likely Republican voters, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis with 17 percent, and every other candidate at 3 percent or lower. And the survey found that in a hypothetical one-on-one matchup without the other candidates, Trump leads DeSantis 62 percent to 31 percent.
What’s most striking about the gap between Trump and DeSantis is its consistency among almost every demographic group and ideological sector...

Why Trump's poll lead went up after criminal indictmentsDonald Trump's mounting legal troubles have not dented his status as the clear frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024. In fact, the criminal charges have strengthened his position. Why?
The former US president has been indicted twice in the past four months - once in New York for alleged financial crimes and once in a federal court on charges that he mishandled sensitive government documents and obstructed an investigation.
He may be on the verge of a third indictment, for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020...

Why Trump Is Winning the Primary—So FarIn a decade and a half of punditry, I’ve had to eat my share of crow for incorrectly predicting voter behavior. I was notably wrong about Brexit and wrong about the 2016 U.S. presidential election, calling them for Remain and Hillary, respectively. The opinion writer’s weakness for wishcasting is partly to blame. But voter preferences can also change quite rapidly. What polls suggest today can be completely upended tomorrow, let alone in several weeks or months.
Having said all that—deep breath—I think Donald Trump is poised to sweep next year’s...
