Border Arrests Drop Over 40% Following Biden's Asylum Pause

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The Department of Homeland Security reported Wednesday that arrests related to illegal crossings at the southern border have dropped more than 40% since the implementation of President Joe Biden’s recent immigration measures.

For Context: Earlier this month, Biden signed an executive order effectively shutting down asylum requests at the southern border. The order institutes a pause on asylum claims when the average daily rate of claims is above 2,500. Since the rate was above the limit when the order was signed, claims were immediately paused. The last time claims were below this limit was in 2020, during the COVID-10 pandemic. There are exceptions to the closure, such as in the case of unaccompanied minors and exceptional humanitarian concerns.

Details: The Department of Homeland Security reported that average daily arrests over a one-week period have fallen below 2,400, the lowest rate since Jan. 17, 2021, a few days before Biden took office. In order for the executive order to begin allowing asylum claims again, the rate needs to fall below 1,500.

How the Media Covered It: Right-rated outlets covered the new data less than left- and center-rated outlets. Newsmax (Right bias) noted in the first paragraph of its coverage that the White House is “taking a victory lap” but that “the numbers remain high.” Politico (Lean Left bias) and Newsweek (Center bias) included quotes from immigration advocates critical of Biden’s executive order, noting ongoing legal efforts to challenge the policy change in court.
