Key Moments from Harris and Walz's First Interview

Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz sat down with CNN's Dana Bash in the first interview since Harris began her campaign. 

The Details: Bash asked Harris about her policy position changes and getting the call from President Joe Biden saying he was dropping out of the presidential race. Bash also asked Walz about controversies around how he has characterized his military service and family's experience with fertility treatments. 

Takeaways From the Left: The Washington Post (Lean Left bias) analyst emphasized that Harris did a nice job walking the line on supporting Biden's accomplishments and at the same time calling for change, and that overall Harris accomplished what she needed to with the interview. 

Takeaways From the Right: Outlets on the right said that Harris dodged questions about what policies she would enact on day one and whether Biden immediately endorsed her. Fox News (Right bias) writers also criticized Walz's answer regarding his military service, saying Walz "attempted to blame his grammar."

Agreement: Both sides honed in on Harris' comment about her policy positions changing. "My values haven't changed," Harris said. A writer for The Washington Post (Lean Left bias) said, "They weren’t the most edifying or enlightening explanations, in that they didn’t really address how much she still might believe in these past policies." Both sides also mentioned that Harris said she would appoint a Republican to her cabinet.
