Announcing AllSides Media Bias Chart Version 11

Blog post image

AllSides is excited to release Version 11 of the AllSides Media Bias Chart, featuring prominent, mostly US-based news sources.

Our chart is like a map of bias — we don’t tell you who is right or wrong, we just tell you their political bias, so you can get the full picture and decide what you think for yourself.

Version 11 includes new outlet reviews (did the Wall Street Journal Opinion pages go left?), updated branding (bye-bye, MSNBC), deeper investigations into disputed sources (hello, Epoch Times), and the addition of several prominent newsletters.

Wall Street Journal Opinion: A Nuanced Bias

The Wall Street Journal Opinion section was also re-reviewed.

  • 543 survey respondents rated it Lean Left on average in the Aug. 2025 Blind Survey.
  • A multipartisan Editorial Review panel rated it Lean Right in Nov. 2025.
  • AllSides opted to keep WSJ Opinion’s rating as Lean Right.

The panel highlighted consistent editorial patterns on WSJ’s opinion pages showcasing biases that were pro-establishment conservative, pro-Zionist, anti-identity politics, pro-free market and anti-populist.

At the time of review, WSJ published pieces against identity politics and rent control, in favor of some immigration, anti-socialist, anti-left wing news bias, and defending high CEO pay. Pieces were rarely critical of President Trump.

Where you sit on the ideological spectrum may influence how you perceive WSJ’s opinion pages: Those further right may see neoconservative or establishment-right perspectives as Center or even Lean Left. This is why it’s important to understand types of ideological bias, which add nuance to the left-to-right spectrum.

The Epoch Times: Extensive, Multi-Stage Bias Review

The AllSides Editorial Review panel took a particularly close look at The Epoch Times after 623 Americans rated The Epoch Times’ news content as Center in our July 2025 Blind Bias Survey. The outlet then underwent two separate Editorial Reviews (Aug. and Nov. 2025). Both reviews rated the outlet Lean Right, placing it just on the border of Center and Lean Right.

While the panel did not detect much explicit bias in the outlet’s news writing and much reporting was neutral and free of common Types of Media Bias, subtle cues pointed rightward:

  • Slight Lean Right patterns in story choice
  • Word choice differences in immigration and LGBTQ coverage
  • Some omission of stories critical of right-leaning figures
  • Strong anti-Chinese Communist Party bias
  • Bias toward traditional values.

This resulted in a final rating of Lean Right, though just barely inside that category.

The Free Press: Disputed Bias Rating

The Free Press was rated Right in our July 2025 Blind Survey. AllSides opted to keep its bias rating as Lean Right, but like Wall Street Journal Opinion, this is another tricky outlet to rate. Its pro-Zionist, anti-identity politics, classical liberal bent frames Democrats negatively and right-wing figures more positively, while not falling totally in line with the "MAGA right" or populist right-wing.

Some bias groups AllSides polled rated The Free Press Center or Lean Left in past surveys, making it another tricky outlet to rate. Vote on our rating for The Free Press here.

Straight Arrow News Confirmed as Balance Certified™

Straight Arrow News (Center) had its Balance Certification reconfirmed in May 2025. AllSides Balance Certification is awarded to outlets that either:

  • equally display a variety of perspectives on the left, center, and right or
  • don’t show a lot of bias or political leanings in news reporting.

(Tip: Another AllSides Balance Certified™ outlet to check out is Verity News, though it is not on the chart.)

The Daily Mail Moved from Right to Lean Right Bias

We moved The Daily Mail from Right to Lean Right following a Sept. 2025 Editorial Review. The entire panel agreed the defining bias associated with the outlet was sensationalism – a type of bias associated with sharing shocking, exciting or exaggerated language used to make a story seem more interesting.

But notably, the sensationalism – as strong as it was – was not exclusive to being favorable to the right. Reviewers on the right argued that its sensationalism was more stylistic rather than strictly partisan, while reviewers on the left said it more often served perspectives on the right. More on that review (and you can vote!) here.

Bias Ratings Confirmed: ZeroHedge, TheBlaze, Daily Beast, The Atlantic, Reuters

Various ratings were confirmed since our last chart update, including Reuters (Center) and The Atlantic (Left) in the July 2025 Blind Bias Survey

We also confirmed the ratings of The Daily Beast (Left), Zerohedge (Lean Right), and TheBlaze (Right) in the Aug. 2025 survey

New Additions to the AllSides Media Bias Chart: Newsletters

With newsletters surging in prominence as a way to get daily stories, we opted to add a few to our bias chart:

1440

1440’s rating (Center) was determined via a Small Group Editorial Review by three trained panelists on the left, center, and right.

Tangle

Tangle’s Center rating was confirmed in the July 2025 Blind Bias Survey.

Morning Brew

Morning Brew received a Center rating in a Dec. 2025 Small Group Editorial Review.

How We Reached These Bias Ratings

Reminder — our bias rating methodology is largely two-pronged: Blind Bias Surveys in which Americans rate the bias of news content without knowing the source, and Editorial Reviews by a multipartisan panel of experts trained to spot bias

We consider ourselves bias experts, but we’re also not sitting on a high horse — we’re the only bias ratings organization that incorporates feedback from people like you. Sign up to help AllSides rate bias and receive our bias research newsletters here.
