One of our most deeply-held beliefs at AllSides is that access to balanced information is a crucial public good.
Since our founding in 2012, AllSides has taken an approach to business that preserves open access to information. We still believe the internet can be the platform on which society reaches new heights of understanding. That’s why much of our content and many of our resources are free to use, while the bulk of our revenue comes from Sustaining Memberships and client services.
To help support that model, today we re-enabled third-party advertisements on our website after a hiatus following major development work. But if you don’t want to see ads, we’re offering a new way to avoid them — you can turn them off simply by becoming a Free Member.
That’s not something you see every day on the internet. Why not? For many digital media sites, the main point of ads is to nickel-and-dime your attention. But we don’t serve up sensationalized ragebait or partisan content in order to get eyeballs. Ad revenue has never been a core part of our business —in fact, it’s contributed less than 5% of our total lifetime revenue.
We’re re-enabling ads as a supplementary revenue stream, not a core pillar. Much more important to us is our society’s ability to get the full picture and understand each other better so we can build a better future together. And to achieve that, we want to hear your unique perspective.
We want you to take our bias quiz and compare results with your friends. We want you to participate in our Blind Bias Surveys to help keep our media bias ratings high-quality and up-to-date. We want you to join Roundtable discussions and add your voice to the deliberative process. And we want you to read our newsletters and forward them to the curious people in your life.
So if you don’t like ads, just create a free account, and we’ll happily remove them for you.
