Steady Freddy: A 2023 tropical storm is the longest on record, ASU weather expert says

A tropical cyclone that crossed the Indian Ocean early last year has been certified as the longest-lasting tropical cyclone on record, the World Meteorological Organization reported Monday. The WMO, an agency of the United Nations responsible for naming storms, declared Tropical Storm Freddy the longest cyclone on record. The storm lasted 36 days at tropical storm status, more than six days longer than Tropical Storm John, the previous record holder, which formed in 1994.
